Epidural Steroid Injections (ESIs)

A highly effective procedure for relieving back, neck and leg pain

Epidural Steroid Injections don’t treat underlying conditions, but they are highly effective for treating back, neck and leg pain.  A combination of saline, a local anesthetic and cortisone is injected directly into the epidural space – the area between the spinal cord and the membrane that covers the spinal cord.  ESIs provide relief by reducing inflammation and flushing out materials that cause pain and inflammation.

What to Expect

It takes just minutes to perform the Epidural Steroid Injection procedure.  While some patients experience modest pain, most report feeling nothing more than pressure.  Because the ESI includes an anesthetic, most patients experience immediate relief, which will wear off after a few hours. Longer term, relief from the steroid, which reduces inflammation, may last for weeks or months. Epidural Steroid Injections may be performed approximately every two weeks if your condition warrants it.

Recovery/Side Effects

Most patients are able to walk and resume normal activities the day after the procedure.  Relief may last several weeks. Side effects from Epidural Steroid Injections are rare, and we will discuss any risks, as well as any concerns you may have, prior to treatment.
