Radio Frequency Neurotomy (RFN), also known as Radio Frequency Ablation, uses radio waves to generate heat that impedes the pain signals being sent out by nerves. RFN provides temporary relief of neck and back pain and is usually used if pain has not responded to more conservative treatments, such as physical therapy. The radio waves are delivered through special needles inserted above the spine.
Prior to beginning the Radio Frequency Neurotomy procedure, we will perform a series of diagnostic tests to determine if the treatment will be beneficial. The RFN procedure itself takes about an hour. An imaging device called a fluoroscope is used to help precisely place the needles in the targeted areas. Ablation therapy provides relief that varies from person to person lasting anywhere from a few months to a few years.
Patients return home immediately following the procedure. Most patients recover after only a few days. Some patients experience temporary soreness throughout the body, though it is usually mild and can be treated by resting or taking over-the-counter medications. Occasionally, serious or long-term discomfort, including persistent numbness, may be associated with the Radio Frequency Neurotomy procedure. Our team will discuss the risks and any concerns you may have prior to treatment.
