Facet Joint Injections

A procedure for diagnosing and treating inflammation-related facet joint pain

Facet joints sit between each vertebra, connecting one to the other so our spines can flex and bend. Inflammation within these joints can cause pain in the neck, back, arms or legs. Facet Joint Injections may be used diagnostically – to confirm that symptoms are related to facet joint inflammation – or therapeutically to relieve facet joint pain so you can comfortably perform physical therapy and daily living tasks.

What to Expect

A combination of an anesthetic and cortisone is injected from the back directly into the facet joint. If the facet joint is the source of pain, relief is immediate. Some patients report mild discomfort from the injection, but most find the roughly 30 minute procedure uneventful. Duration of relief varies by individual, with some patients experiencing relief for a few hours and others for a few months. Depending on your condition and individualized treatment plan, Facet Joint Injections may be performed up to three times a year.

Recovery/Side Effects

You can expect to resume regular activities the day after receiving a Facet Joint Injection. Side effects are rare, and your doctor will discuss any risks and your concerns prior to treatment.
